WECO Elevator Products was founded in Killarney in 2004 to design and supply electronic lift components to the latest EU regulations for the international lift industry, initially for the main European markets, although WECO now has South American and Middle Eastern customers.
The KTI Centre was the ideal location as an initial single desk space gave an instant office solution at low cost. This enabled WECO to present a professional image in an established business location, saving time and effort and allowed the company founders to concentrate on developing the international side of the business in the crucial start-up phase. The company grew quickly in this environment and in 2006 had to move into a full 400 ft² office unit in the KTI Centre to cater for the expansion of the company.
In 2007, French, German, Spanish and Polish speaking staff were added to cater for the growth of the company. Staff from the Chinese and Spanish offices regularly attend training sessions in Killarney and they are impressed by the town’s beauty and ease of access for mainland Europe.
WECO has established a strong presence in the main European markets backed by the new logistics centre in Barcelona, Spain, The operational focus now is to expand outside of these markets. New distributors have been appointed this year in Slovenia, Croatia and the Dominican Republic. At the Istanbul Lift exhibition this year we booked our first orders in Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon.
In partnership with another technology company based in the KTI Centre, WECO is currently researching a number of promising new product lines in the lift electronics area and is conducting a feasibility study into locating an R & D and Test centre in Killarney, along with a technical back-up team to support the European roll-out of the projects in 2008.
Dennis Carey – Personal Profile
Dennis Carey is the founder and Managing Director of WECO Elevator Products and comes from Kilcummin. He went to St Brendan’s College in Killarney and graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a B.Sc. in Mgmt in 1990.
After college, Dennis headed off to Germany and began working in the lift and escalator industry with a German company called 3-MAP GmbH in Munich. He steadily climbed the ranks until he was appointed Export Manager at the age of 28, responsible for Central Europe and Scandinavia. Shortly afterwards the company opened a Beijing office to exploit the growing Chinese market and Dennis was appointed Manager of Group Operations for North East Asia, based in Beijing, at the start of 1997. Dennis worked in China and Asia for two years, developing export markets, appointing and training local distributors and selling lifts and escalators for large prestigious projects such as Chang Kai Shek Airport in Taiwan, the Nanjing Stock Exchange in China and the Inner Region Airport in Mongolia.
Dennis got married to Leeane in 1998 and decided to return to Ireland. He was appointed Sales Director of Mid West Lifts in Limerick and worked there from 1999 to 2003. It was a busy time in the building industry with the Celtic tiger in full roar. Mid West Lifts expanded from a regional Munster company to a national company in those years with contracts in every part of Ireland as well as in Scotland and London. After 5 years Dennis felt it was time to move on and try something different. He decided to return to the export arena where he had started out in the lift business and set up his own company, WECO Elevator Products, at the start of 2004.
WECO Elevator Productsspecialises in the design and supply of electronic lift components. WECO in Europe has its head office in the KTI Centre, Killarney and has its own sales’ offices in Nice, Munich and Barcelona. WECO opened a logistics centre in Barcelona to cater for the European market in June of 2007.
WECO also works with partner companies in Toronto and Shanghai to cover all time zones. The latest addition to the international WECO group of companies opened in Kerala in Southern India in September 2007. WECO currently sells in over 40 countries and on all five continents.
Dennis and Leeane have two children, Ceire aged nine and Daire aged three, and have a keen interest in the outdoors and in country life.
